50 With A 50 – Week 28

This week in my #50WithA50 I was walking around the campus I work on and came across come an area that is starting to get a bit over grown. Not sure why it’s not being maintained but there were a few nice weather beaten tables and flag stones with grasses and weeds growing. I tried a few different shots but this one of a single blade of grass growing through the boards of a bench and gone to seed caught my attention. I like the narrow depth of field of the 50mm 1.8 and this is a great example. It’s so narrow at 1.8 that it’s almost impossible to get anything in focus, but that’s part of the fun. The focus on this isn’t as wide as the piece of grass.

50 With A 50 – Week 27

Summer time with kids in the house seems to be chalk season. Kids love it. The cul-de-sac our house is on gets coloured and drawn on every sunny day. I decided to grab a shot of one of Molly’s boxes of chalk for this weeks #50WithA50

50 With A 50 – Week 26

July 1st is Canada Day but in Newfoundland it is also Memorial Day. On the 1st of July 1916 the Newfoundland Regiment of 758 men left their trenches at Beaumont Hamel and the next day only 68 were fit to answer roll call. The others were dead, injured or missing. The forget-me-not flower is used as a symbol of remembrance. Since they are growing in gardens in my neighbourhood I thought I’d post a picture of one for this weeks #50WithA50.

50 With A 50 – Week 25

Week 25! Half way through my #50WithA50 project. I probably should have picked some grand subject for this milestone but it’s summer time and there is a tree in my neighbourhood with cherry blossoms on it and it probably wont be in bloom next week so it was this week or never. I love cherry blossoms, one of the things I miss from Dublin is the blanket of cherry blossoms that used to be in some areas. There aren’t that many cherry blossom trees here, I really should get a couple for our garden. Though 5 winters killed 2 of the 4 regular trees that were at the side of our house. Another winter will probably finish off the other 2 trees so I’m not sure how cherry blossoms would survive. I would have to plant them inside the fence and away from the road and the mountains of snow pushed up by the plow.

50 With A 50 – Week 24

We had some beautiful yellow tulips in our garden, surrounded by their less beautiful but still yellow dandelion cousins. Unfortunately one evening our daughter was out playing with her friends and they picked some yellow flowers. I assumed they were picking some of the hundreds of dandelions but instead they decided to pick half the tulips. I was a little annoyed but I couldn’t be angry, technically we didn’t tell them not to pick the tulips and I should probably have clarified the situation when I heard they were picking “yellow flowers”. This is one of those poor tulips and it fell apart so was abandoned by the kids. Next morning it was covered in rain drops and with the bright sun shining on it I took a few close up shots and a couple with the 50mm lens for my #50WithA50 project. I liked this one, it almost looks like a weird bee or another yellow insect.

50 With A 50 – Week 23

Another very busy week so another late post, but still here is week 23 in my #50WithA50 project. Almost half way 🙂 This week has been busy because we started a 3 day project to redo our kitchen and we are currently onto day 7 of that 3 day project and 2 more to go. The problem is I’m trying to take my time and do things properly like sanding everything down instead of just deglossing with chemicals from the kit. Then I have to give everything enough time to dry and since I’m doing things at home in the evenings that generally has meant one coat a day and then we’ve done 3 coats. Really riveting stuff. I’d much rather be out taking photos but that hasn’t been possible. Hopefully after this week I’ll be able to get back to normal.
