4 Years

Four years ago last week I met my fiancee at the Irish Blog Awards. We get married this August so it would have been nice to go to the awards again this year but unfortunately its not possible. Maybe we’ll go in 2012 after the wedding.

I picked up some flowers for her and after she put them in a vase I sneaked a couple of photos. The new 24-70 2.8 lens does produce a nice depth of field but when it’s that narrow it’s a real pain to keep the focus steady hand held. I’ll be taking photos at a wedding in a few weeks so I’ll have to develop a firm stance.

GE11

General Election 2011 is over, at least the first one is over and hopefully the politicians can sort out a deal to make a stable government. The odds are that a Fine Gael/Labour coalition will govern for some years to come while the outgoing Fianna Fail party could take several elections to recover from the  disaster that befell it. At the end of the day Fianna Fail cant blame anyone but themselves. Their policy decisions over the last decade led the country into an unsustainable boom and when it all collapsed they landed the nation with a huge amount of debt while trying to shore up a group of banks that mattered little to anyone outside the golden circle of property developers and politicians.  I personally dont doubt most of the TDs thought they were doing the right thing for the country but they had become so removed from the real country and the ordinary people that they did not understand what life was like outside Government Buildings.

I voted. I always have since I was old enough to vote. When you consider what people went through to get the right to vote then it seems childishly ungrateful not to spare 10 minutes every 5 years on the way home to call into a hall and put a mark on a piece of paper. For ID I brought my passport and before heading over to the polling station I snapped a couple of shots. Most of them didnt come out and then on the way I only managed to get one photo of the election posters that I liked. I did try to sneak an iPhone photo of the ballot paper when I was in the voting booth (not allowed but I wasnt the only one who did it) but it didnt come out so these two photos will just have to do for this election.

Street Performer

I got delayed posting this with my travels at the start of the week. I could hold it over to next week but I figured I’d just post it today. Last weekend a street performer on Grafton St entertained the crowds on what was one of the first really spring like weekends of the year. He put on a pretty good act and got lots of interaction from the crowd, especially when he cycled his giraffe unicycle through them. I’d guess this was deliberate but the crowd definitely didn’t expect it.

Above the Sunrise

I normally sleep on early morning flights but was awake this morning and saw a beautiful sunrise from above the red clouds. In a about 2 minutes the clouds went from grey to bright red and back again.

Unfortunately despite my early start this morning I have a touch of insomnia tonight so I’m lying awake posting pictures when I should be fast asleep for tomorrows meetings. I should have stayed away from the espresso after dinner.

February Sunset

Went into town on Saturday to do my usual wander around the shops, get a coffee and take photos. A street performer on Grafton St occupied me for a while and will probably make a post later in the week (after another bloody business trip). On the way to meet my fiancee and some friends for dinner and a few drinks I crossed the Ha’Penny bridge and joined the crowd photographing a stunning sunset over the Liffey. It did make me a bit late for dinner but sure twas worth it, she has grown very tolerant of me vanishing with a camera.
