Caribbean Princess Leaves St John’s

The cruise ship the Caribbean Princess leaves St John’s harbour today through The Narrows beside Signal Hill. The ship looked huge up close and while she was trying to manevour in the harbour to leave. The noise from all the other ships horns blaring farewell was deafening but a great send off for the ship. It made me jealous of all the passengers sailing out on a ship like that, their view must have been amazing.

I put it into panoramic because I though the photo worked better without the too much sky and water but with as much of The Narrows as possible. It makes it a little small in the blog post but if you click on the picture you’ll see it full size.

Moon

After hearing of the death of Neil Armstrong on Sunday I went out to take some photos of the half moon on a very clear night. It was my first attempt and I liked the result especially since I was using an old Sigma 70-300 lens. It was on a tripod which helped and the air couldnt have been better.

St John’s Row Houses

A few weeks ago on a beautiful sunny day I walked around downtown St John’s taking photographs of the iconic row houses. Of the hundreds of shots I “narrowed” it down to 30 favourites, but even then lets be honest no one wants to sit through 30 images of houses in a slideshow. Therefore I decided to play around a little and using the print module in Lightroom came up with an image that shows just a sample of the photos from that day.  I might throw up another couple of images like this one or I might upload all the images into a slideshow anyway, but for now here are the St John’s Row Houses.

Another night in Torbay

Another photo from another night out on the cliffs of Torbay. This time I went down towards the water itself. The weather here has taken a turn for the worse since then so it’s given me time to catch up on my photo processing.

Blog accident

These rocks are a nesting ground for seagulls and sometimes they stay still long enough to appear in long exposure shots, sometimes but not often.

I’ll use this new post as an opportunity to explain a bit of a accident I had with the blog this morning. In a tired haze I decided to tidy up some old wordpress installations without realising that all the posts since August 2010 still pointed to files under those folders. I’ve spent most of the day tidying up the mess and I’ve got most of them reposted now from my Lightroom catalogs. One or two big months to go and all the photos should be back.

Update: All back I think. Might have gotten a few pics wrong but they are 3 years old so I had a hard time remembering exactly which ones they were.

Torbay

Here is a photo from a walk in the neighbourhood last night. We are currently living in Torbay which is just outside St John’s, it’s like a suburb but dont let the locals hear me say that. This view is a 5 minute walk from the house.
