St John’s Snow

StJohnsSnow-1We went up Signal Hill last weekend at the end of the Christmas holidays to take some photos of the city with snow on the ground. Initially I wanted to take photos of Cabot Tower with the star still lit up but the sunset over the city was nicer.

This is the start of real winter. it was -8 with a windchill of -18 according to the radio. That’s only the beginning, we are forecast to have the first winter storm of the year this week, up to 70cms of snow on Thursday. It should be interesting.

St Johns Fireworks

Fireworks2013StJohns-1Here’s a quick photo of the star on Cabot Tower up on Signal Hill with the New Years fireworks from Quidi Vidi beside it. I took this with a new tripod I got for Christmas which is lighter and more portable. The old one was a good quality sturdy tripod but too awkward to carry around when I was walking. A smaller one might not be as sturdy but I’ll use it more now I can bring it with me. It’s something I needed for my landscape photos and I’m hoping to get more night and long exposure photos as well.

On top of that I recently replaced my water damaged Sigma 18-200 with a new Sigma 18-250. It might not be the best quality lens in my bag but it’s useful to have a lens with that flexibility.

Merry Christmas

RebBerries-1This the closest I have to a Christmas photo this year so I’ll use it to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. It was taken in the snow a couple of weekends ago. The snow is gone now but another storm is on the way for this weekend so perhaps I’ll get some more winter photos to add to the collection.

Torbay Winter

This weekend we had a big fall of snow, 23cm on Saturday night. At least to me that was a big fall of snow but to the locals they seemed to think it was pretty average. Since it was the weekend I had a great opportunity to get out on Sunday morning while the snow was still fresh to get some photos. Taking photos in snow like this is a new experience to me but I did manage to get a couple of ok shots. This view stood out because the buildings across the bay were painted in bright colours. The snow is starting to melt today but I expect I’ll have plenty more opportunities before the winter ends here.

Trinity East

Another photo from our trip to Trinity. This time it’s from the Trinity East area.

It’s snowing here this week. I’d love to get out with my camera for a while over the weekend and take some photos. My friends and family here say it wont last long and could be gone any morning and we might not see another fall of snow like it til after Christmas. There is also a family christening at the weekend, that’ll give me a chance to take some  people photos again.

All that said I dont know when I’d post any new photos here, I’m enjoying digging through the old photos to see what I’ve got but overlooked in the past. It’s probably something I should have done years ago.

Trinity Bay

While I haven’t had time to go out and take new photos I still have a lot of photos in my collection that I haven’t worked on previously. I got an email over the weekend from someone who liked one of my photos and wanted to use it in a project. It might not come to anything yet but it did inspire me to go back into the library and find some of these photos that I can do a bit of work on.

This one comes from a trip to Trinity town back in 2010 when we stayed in a house in the historic part of the town and I was able to get out early for sunrise photos and rain showers that produced some dramatic shots.
