Burin Boats

Here’s another photo from our trip to Burin, I have several so I’ll be posting them here over the next while. I could do it all in one burst but that would leave me nothing to post later on 🙂

This one is from our Sunday breakfast. A group of us headed out to a nearby cafe and they had a deck with a beautiful view out over the bay. The three boats tied up outside were what originally caught my eye and with the church on the hill in the background I liked this shot.

Newfoundland

I’ve been quiet here lately but I’ve been in the middle of a move to Newfoundland in Canada so I think I’ve got a good excuse this time. My wife is from St John’s and we decided to give life in her home town a go for a few years anyway. We want to build a life here but if things don’t work out we know we could return to Ireland.

We are just about set up here now, at least in our temporary place until we get jobs and can get a house of our own. We still need to get a car as well but that can wait for the moment.

At the weekend we rented a car and went with some friends out to Burin which is 4 hours away from St John’s. It was a foggy weekend so that gave me the opportunity to try out some long exposure shots. Newfoundlanders seem to hate the fog but it’s still new to me so I think it could add real atmosphere to photos. I still need to practice and learn but I do like this style of photography so I’m going to give it some time and try to take more photos around the province.

Salvage Boathouse

We are back in Ireland after a month in Newfoundland. A month may seem like a long time but considering we got married in the middle and had family around for a week extra it wasn’t actually that long a holiday. We had 3 days for a long weekend outside of St Johns and revisited the town of Salvage. A beautiful old Atlantic Canada town, we’d been there a few years ago and it was only as we drove on the road that I remembered this little boathouse just outside the town so we had to stop to take some photos. Fortunately it was still there, though not as isolated as it was since someone has built a house just a little further down the coast that I don’t remember being there before.

Last weekend was also Peoples Photography 2011 and I took part again though the short time between arriving home and exhibiting meant I had to display many photos from 2010. The weather wasn’t as nice as last year but I still had a good time and met lots of nice people so weekend was still a success.

Salvage

Hurricane Igor is pounding Newfoundland today. According to reports electricity is out all over the island and many roads are washed out isolating small communities such as Salvage. Days like this must make living in old wooden houses on the edge of lakes and bays a frightening experience.

Update: Wow, ok, it appears at least one of my monitors needs to be calibrated, the picture on my work monitor (which isnt the best anyway) looks very blue and has no punch. Time to get out the spyder calibration tool.

Newfoundland Nets

It has been a busy few weeks since I got back from Newfoundland but I’ve finally managed to go through the last of the photos from the vacation and especially the ones from Trinity. I love that little town, have to go back there again next year. This photo of some fishing nets left on the dock of an old abandoned shipyard. Trinity proper is almost a little too perfect, all nicely preserved for the tourism market so it was nice to find this shipyard and take some photos there.
